Selenium is an essential micro-mineral for staying healthy. Selenium is incorporated into proteins to form selenoproteins, which are considered antioxidant enzymes. It helps prevent cell damage caused by free radicals, contributes to the regulation of the thyroid gland and plays an important role in our immune system, among other functions.

Functions of selenium:

   ● Antioxidant. It prevents cell damage, together with vitamin E and vitamin C, caused by the oxidation of free radicals. In other words, it prevents cellular ageing and the appearance of chronic diseases such as cancer or heart disease.

   ● Immunity. It is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system, as it increases the production of white blood cells.

   ● Thyroid. It is involved in the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, as it is an essential element for normal development, growth and metabolism, due to its role in the regulation of thyroid hormones.

   ● Selenoproteins. There are at least 25 identified selenoproteins with different functions, most with antioxidant functions.

Other functions:

   ● Neutralises the effects of heavy metals (arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury).

   ● It is involved in the metabolism of lipids and fats.

   ● It would improve male fertility.

   ● Improves hair and nail growth.

Natural sources of selenium:

The amount of selenium in food depends on the selenium content of the soil where animals are raised or plants are grown. Animals that eat grains or plants grown in soils with high levels of selenium will consequently have more selenium in their muscles. Plant foods are the world's largest source of selenium. It is also found in meat, fish, seafood, cereals, bread, and nuts.
