This robust plant is cultivated in Japan, China, and Korea, and the rhizome and root are harvested in autumn.

Its composition is notable for the presence of an essence containing carvacrol, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid, as well as phytosterols and coumarins.

The main virtues of dong quai include its activity as a hormone regulator. It is a natural source of phyto-oestrogens, ideal for compensating for the reduction or cessation of oestrogen generation in pre- and post-menopausal women. It is also credited with the ability to regulate the presence of these hormones in the body, slowing it down when there is an excess and activating it when there is a deficiency.

It has a remarkable analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic effect, calming muscle tension and relieving spasms, and is therefore indicated for a wide range of female complaints, including amenorrhoea and dysmenorrhoea, as well as for soothing premenstrual and period pain, including migraine, backache, and kidney pain.

This plant also stimulates the cardiovascular system and blood flow and is useful for alleviating ailments linked to poor circulation such as chilblains, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids.

Some sources attribute to it a strong antibacterial activity and as a regulator of the immune response. It is therefore useful for preventing infections and broncho-respiratory allergies and asthma.

Dong quai is also useful for treating disorders associated with the female climacteric period, such as hot flushes and night sweats.

This compound is present in our Bel Armonia product.
