It is an important polyphenolic compound found in green tea. Catechins are flavonoids that represent one of the major active substances in tea and provide one of its characteristic properties: its capacity as an antioxidant. There are several varieties of this flavonoid, all present in tea: epicatechin (EEC), epigallocatechin (EGC) and the most important in terms of its presence, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), whose antioxidant capacity is between 40 and 100 times greater than vitamins C and E.
● It acts as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-allergic agent (inhibits the release of histamine, a key chemical compound in allergic reactions).
● Weight control.
● It has been shown to prevent the onset of cancer and slow its spread by inhibiting urokinase, a key enzyme in tumour growth.
